site stats

If you didn’t know already: IE does not display this site correctly, due to web standards. Most importantly IE is susceptible to viruses, and spyware; due to Microsoft’s inability to patch it’s own browser in a timely manner. So I highly recommend, a safe, more standards compliant browser such as Mozilla Firefox.

Long run today…

You might think I am tired of blogging about my training already. NOPE! I just haven’t been training. :) My technical project manager is out on vacation this week, so I had to take care of a few meetings in the mornings. That’s my excuse, and I am sticking to it! To make up for my lazyness, I decided to go for a long run today. Here are the stats…

  • Total Time: 1h19min1s
  • Distance: 6.6 mi
  • Heart rate avg: 93% / 180 bpm
  • Heart rate max: 98% / 190 bpm
  • Calories (burned): 1260 Kcal
  • Speed avg: 5 mi/h
  • Speed max: 7 mi/h
  • Pace avg: 12min 1s/mi
  • Pace max: 8min 36s/mi
  • Time in zone: 19s (obviously I was not trying to stay in the zone) :)
  • Miles in rain/hail: ~2mi

Running doesn’t require a lot of gear right? Just put on some clothes and shoes, you are good to go. I just realized today how much gear I put on to get ready for a run. Here are the things I have to put on…

  1. Shirt and shorts
  2. Heart rate monitor strap
  3. Sweat band on my arm
  4. Sunblock
  5. Heart rate monitor
  6. Hat
  7. Sunglasses
  8. Socks
  9. Shoes
  10. MP3 player
  11. Keys
  12. Belt for drinks (new)

I just got a new belt that will carry 2 20oz bottles yesterday. I figured today would be the perfect time to use it. For the first mile or so, I really felt the weight of the 2 extra bottles on my back. I got used to it though. It is nice to have something to drink on these long (for me) runs.

Back to my running stats, I really wish my heart would start being more efficient. Having an average heart rate at 93% of my max worries me a bit. I felt fine during the run though. Do I have some humming bird genes in me?

The interesting part of today’s run is the rain/hail that I had to run through. It’s the first time I’ve ever ran in rain, let alone hail! The sky was perfectly clear when I started running, but some dark clouds moved in and started throwing water and ice at me. It was freezing cold. Just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, the sun came to the rescue. The sun warmed me back up for the last mile of the run.

I am happy with my progress and the 6.6 mile run today. 2 weeks ago today, I was averaging 1min/mi slower AND I was only doing 2.2 miles. 3 times the distance 1min/mi faster. I am happy. :)

I will probably keep my max distance to around 6 miles for the rest of the season. I am only aiming for one race this year (Nautica Malibu Triathlon in September), and that is a sprint distance triathlon, so there’s really no need for me to train for too long of a distance. Goals for my future 6 mile runs…

  • Walk less…
  • Lower my HR…
  • Run faster…

GO ME!

Rock on, Ely! Nice run. I’m doing better too, but you’re way ahead. I got behind this last week too, I guess too busy with work, oh and I didn’t have my car (couldn’t drive to the gym). So far this weekend though I’ve done 5 miles, over two days and with a lot of walking :p.
